As part of continuing improvements to the M5 East Freeway, Leighton Contractors’ (LCPL) Services Division undertook a program of resurfacing works (including the on/off ramps and tunnels) to provide a safer, smoother and quieter ride for motorists.

This work was undertaken between December 2011 and April 2012. It was hoped that the resurfacing program would be completed by the end of February; however the continual wet weather delayed the program into April.

Leighton Contractors and the Roads and Maritime Services thank motorists and residents for their patience during these works.

Update on work completed

At as the last asphalting shift on 13 April, 83% of the freeway had been resurfaced.

All work on the eastbound and westbound carriageways between King Georges Road and the main tunnel is complete.

All work in both the main tunnel and the Cooks River Tunnel is complete.

Temporary line-marking is in place on all sections of the freeway that has been resurfaced. (Please note that the final-line marking will be undertaken as part of the regular monthly maintenance and is expected to be completed around June 2012).

Update on remaining work
The remaining asphalting works will be completed when the warmer weather returns later this year. This is because the asphalt mix being used on the freeway cannot be laid in cooler weather conditions. The areas of resurfacing work not yet completed include:

Eastbound carriageway between Marsh Street and General Holmes Drive (excluding Cooks River Tunnel).

Westbound carriageway between Marsh Street and General Holmes Drive (excluding Cooks River Tunnel).

A section of the Bexley Road on-ramp.

A section of the Kingsgrove Road on-ramp.

Kingsgrove Road off-ramp.

Marsh Street on-ramp (westbound).

Marsh Street off-ramp (westbound).

The areas of pavement not completed will be closely monitored over the upcoming winter period to ensure that the freeway is safe for drivers.

Leighton Contractors and the Roads and Maritime Services will continue to keep residents and motorists informed about freeway closures and night works.
